If you are new to poker (read also: Poker Rules), at home with your friends or online poker, or are surrounded by ace players - make yourself the wild card by reading up on some of the tips and tricks that the best of poker players swear by. Some call it a game of luck, but in fact it involves a great deal of strategy and psychological manipulation and reading. Skills, such as patience in determining which hands to play, when to bluff, and how to read your opponent just aren't used when playing low-limit against your relatives. If you are playing too many hands in an online poker environment, you will find yourself short stacked in no time. (read also: What Makes a Good Poker Player)

| Patience

If you play too many hands in a pro-level poker game, you will likely not win - it is mathematically impossible to last for any length of time. But, if you play this many hands in a home game, you may fair better because the sheer size of the pot from the hands you draw out on may offer sufficient pot-odds to draw on that inside straight or whatever the case may be.

| Bluffing

Bluffing will succeed in a professional poker game. It is hard to pull off a bluff in the family oriented game.  The main reason for this is the limits are set against you. That 25 cents you've raised the pot isn't going to be enough to scare anyone away, even if it was a check-raise. Anyone will call, even if they thought they were beaten. In a professional poker game, bluffing is a sound strategy. If you've played very few hands, it's very possible to steal a pot at the end of a hand by becoming overly aggressive at the right time.

| Reading your opponent

If professional poker was a game of chance or luck, there would be no such thing as professionally poker player and the people you see on the television constantly winning tournaments (i.e. Phil Ivey, Doyle Brunson, etc) would just have to be the luckiest people in the world. This, obviously, is not the case.

Poker bluffing - 10 winning tips

Bluffing is the art of making other players believe you have a better hand than you really have. If used correctly bluffing can help you enhance your profits from poker and win big. Here are ten tips to help you bluff successfully.

| Tip 1:

Bluff when "someone" might have made a good hand. An example is when the third of a suit hits the board. "Someone" might have a flush. If you bet as if you have the flush, the other players may believe you. space

| Tip 2:

Bluff if you are in a pot with a player that is looking for a reason to fold. By betting, big and making them think you have something they can't match; you can remove them from the game.space

| Tip 3:

Pay attention to other players - the more you know about your opponent's habits the better. If a player is a novice, they may bluff too frequently making them easy prey. However, it's the more experienced players you need to watch.

| Tip 4:

If players have seen you bluffing recently, they will register it. If you try to bluff again too soon then someone is likely to call you. Of course, this can be used to your advantage. If you find yourself with a good hand after being caught bluffing, odds are players will call your bets.

| Tip 5:

Bluff tight tables only. As a rule, bluffs have a better chance of working at tight tables rather than loose tables, unless all the "loose players" have already folded.

| Tip 6:

Bluff high limit tables only. In low limit games, there's really no advantage in bluffing. When betting only small amounts, you can bet that the majority of the time someone will call your bluff. High limits, and especially no limit games, are ideal for successful bluffing.

| Tip 7:

Bluff high limit tables only. In low limit games, there's really no advantage in bluffing. When betting only small amounts, you can bet that the majority of the time someone will call your bluff. High limits, and especially no limit games, are ideal for successful bluffing.  Bluff from late position only. If everyone is checking, calling, or folding in front of you, it's a good time to try to get the pot. It's not a good idea to bluff from early position, because you have no idea of other player's hands.

| Tip 8:

Don't bluff too often, and try to adopt a pattern other players will find difficult to spot. If you bet with a pattern, they're sure to spot it. A good bluffing strategy will keep them guessing.

| Tip 9:

Be careful when bluffing bad players, as they may not know when they are beaten! Even though you may present yourself as having a stronger hand, they simply may not care or not even notice, as they have not perfected a strategy of their own.

Bluffing Is an Essential Strategy for All Poker Players Bluffing is not a science it's an art.

| Tip 10:

Some bluffing situations are 'typical', and you need to be able to use them to your advantage. Good players however, may spot this, note the play and use it against you.

Here is a typical situation where bluffing can be effective:
You are in the late position pre-flop and after you, there are just two players left. Your cards are not indicating a good hand, but everyone before you have folded. This is an ideal time to bluff and bet big. The remaining players will probably think that you have a big hand and fold.

Should you Play Free Poker ?

Even if the free poker variant won’t teach you how to handle aggression, if you are going to play poker in either tournaments or cash games, first you’ll need to know what you are doing. Many players get trapped up in wanting to just check and call their way until the river. When you play this way, you are likely to end short stacked and throwing your chips away – if you don’t have the best hand and failing to maximize your value when you do have the best hand will drain out your bank. If your cards are good enough to be calling, then think about a raise.

To learn how to play poker only takes a little of your time every day. You can play an hour for free and then, you can start making some real money. Unlike other online gambling, online poker is far more fitting and it offers the same chance of winning.

Free poker is different from, for example, free bingo, because poker is a game of skill where you can win money without making any bet.

Freerolls do work for this purpose, tournaments with free entries too.
